C's draft

Simmons doesn't like it. And neither does SI's Kelly Dwyer. I'll wait to pass judgement until I see whether AI, KG or Jermaine O'Neal end up in a C's uniform.

By the way, from what I've read about Leon Powe (can't retrace the links at the moment, sorry) he's a very good player who got the Golden Bears into the NCAA tourney, but has had 2 knee reconstruction surgerys which scared teams off. He's supposed to be a solid inside player with good defense and rebounding, excellent short-offense and a developing mid-range shot. Averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds this past year.

I like the trade of LaFrentz for Ratliff. Defense is good, and the difference in contracts is a big plus.

So then you've got the question of the #7 pick or Telfair. I'm OK with Telfair. When guys start to play, you get to see all their flaws, but in the weeks before the draft none of them have any flaws at all. In two years, half the guys drafted in the top ten are going to be players you wouldn't cross the street for. Telfair is as young as them, and Ainge has had a chance to see what he can do -- presumably he sees someone. When a player doesn't perform for a team like Portland, you don't know how much of the problem is that the team is a trainwreck.

Interesting, the C's now have two pure PGs (Telfair and Rondo) after having none. Clearly, Ainge has decided that the offense needed a distributor. It takes a little while to learn how to do that in the NBA, so perhaps that's a plus for Telfair relative to the alternatives who were available at #7.

I'm not that excited about the Celtics' draft either. Roy, Foye, and Gay all have a chance to be very good. Instead of taking a shot on them, Ainge got you guys a player who has some significant flaws in his game. He's more ready to help now, but I'm not convinced that he'll be better than Roy long-term.

I'm not as high on Ratliff as you are. If you guys were getting the Ratliff of the latter half of 03-04, sure. But you're not. He looked pretty bad last season. That said, LaFrentz was a stiff and I do like the fact that you shortened that dead weight contract from three years to two.

I like the move for Rondo. He projects to be a decent backup for a long time, maybe a starter.

Overall I'm much more excited about the Bulls draft (sorry, had to rub it in) although frankly I really hope the team makes a big move to get a player like Garnett. Even Wallace (via free agency) would be huge although we could use another scoring threat. We really need a talent like those guys to compete for a championship in the upcoming years.

I'm really high on Thomas, though. I think he was the best talent in the draft, and Paxson was clever to get the Blazers to give him something to move up. I don't know much about the swingman we got, but everything I've read is good.

Unfortunately I keep hearing that Garnett won't be traded and that the Bulls won't overspend for Wallace. I'm not sure where that leaves us, in the end of the day.

The Bulls have a ton of depth and young talent, and our team defense is awesome. We gave Dwayne Wade more problems than any other team did. But we just got even younger and more deep. I'd like to consolidate and get a veteran big man or tall guard who can score. Yes, even if it's Paul Pierce.
