Garnett

It is unfortunate that this deal would involve the loss of Jefferson. But, let's step back for a moment. The existing Celtic team has been weak for a while now, but old friend Kevin McHale has been basically willing, over the past couple of years, to take the whole team from Boston -Davis, Blount, now Bassy/Green/Jefferson/Ratliff. I would not be surprised to see Wolves fans call for McHale's firing for turning the Wolves' nucleus into that of a poor Celtic team.

A Pierce-Allen-Garnett trio is going to be looking very old very quickly, but I like the chance to win in the next two years with this core. I'd like it better if Garnett is the 02-05 version of himself (~23ppg, 13+ rebounds), but his performance the last two years is really just about as good (worse fg% is the biggest change, but ft% is up, and points and rebounds are not significantly down).

I guess this means that I care less about "building" for the future. But since that doesn't seem to be working, let's try this.

RE: "building" for the future

It would appear that the future is now, or at most the next 2-3 years. Celtics tickets anyone?

Hmmm...slightly worse that Gomes would go too. But not so bad.

And that would be 7 ex-Celts on the Wolves. So, the big consolation to this deal? If you ultimately don't like the new-look Celtics, you can still see the old-look Celtics in Minnesota!

(Not unlike watching the Tar Heels, now all members of the Charlotte Hornets...)

Chris' point is a good one-- the TWolves have decided to recreate a slightly older version of the pre-All Star break 2004-05 Celtics, minus Paul Pierce:

Ricky Davis, Mark Blount, Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Gerald Green, Justin Reed

With Pierce that team finished with 33 wins. Minnesota fans will probably spend a lot of next year watching Derrick Rose and OJ Mayo.

Now I read that 2 first round picks will go as well...definitely no "building" happening soon. So, let's hope for an insta-banner for the rafters by 2009 at the latest; THEN the Celts can build for sure!

This isn't going to be the T'Wolves's Herschel Walker trade, will it? They become the Cowboys dynasty of the NBA? Naw...

Simmons's latest sidebar goes even further with the "Minnesota Celtics" idea - if you aren't a fan of this deal, you can still root for the Frozen C's:

"Minny is rebuilding around Jefferson, Corey Brewer, Randy Foye, Gerald Green and Ryan Gomes ... ironically, the same core (along with Paul Pierce) that Boston could have had if it kept its last two first-round picks. So we get to see how it would have worked out if Boston hadn't done anything. It's like watching the Bizarro Celtics."
