Who fires their GM a month before the trade deadline?

The Toronto Raptors, that's who!

Looks like Vinsanity is still screwing things up for Toronto even when he's not there any more. That was a lose-lose situation for Babcock. Carter was dogging it, so Babcock could only get pennies on the dollar. Now he's playing like a man posessed, and the trade looks awful. I guess it didn't help that his draft pick sucked, but LOTS of draft picks suck. That's why they only have two rounds of the draft anymore.

But I'll go on record and say there's more to this story than what's in the brief ESPN article. A year and a half isn't really a fair shot for any GM.

I think the Raptors have a right to be down on Babcock for the Vince Carter trade. He should have waited longer before pulling the trigger--he could have done better.

He also really screwed up by wasting a lottery pick on Rafael Araujo, who is just awful. Most draft observers thought that pick was off the wall, and Araujo has been awful.

But he also made some great moves. Trading for Mike James was inspired, and gambling on Charlie Villanueva with the 7th pick appears to have worked out.

I agree that there are better GMs out there than Babcock, but he didn't deserve to be fired in mid-season like this. His record is mixed, not entirely awful.
