Calling armchair GMs.

I would have guessed that the over/under on posts using ESPN.com's NBA Trade Machine by this point would have been, oh, 17 or something. Color me wrong. This raises the possibility that the rest of y'all have been suffering a localized ESPN.com outage, which would have prevented you from reading Bill Simmons on the black Super Bowl. Consider this a humanitarian gesture. And if not, maybe someone with the Insider subscription can tell me whether Chad Ford thinks the Celtics should trade Paul Pierce, and why.

I enjoyed all the ESPN coverage, but couldn't be fussed to write anything. I think I'm still in shock from mmazzotta's "glimmer of hope" post. :)

The Trade Machine is a nice rip-off of RealGM's trade checker, which is basically the same thing and has been around a lot longer.

I did enjoy the trade hypotheticals, although copyright laws prevent me from doing more than paraphrase them. Ford makes it clear, as he has in the past, that the Celtics would be better off trading Pierce and rebuilding. He suggests a Bulls/Celtics trade that's similar to what you've seen before, and also suggests a smaller Olowokandi+Gerald Green for Brevin Knight+Bernard Robinson deal. Frankly he has better ideas for the other four teams (Knicks, T-Wolves, Nuggets, Bulls).

The most interesting article, in my opinion, is Chris Sheridan's ten most likely players to be dealt column. It's actually based on conversations with GMs instead of his own imagination, which is a plus. As expected, Penny Hardaway is high on the list ... as I told mmazzotta at the time, the Celtics would have been far better off trading for that expiring contract instead of taking on Wally's deal.

My guess is that the most likely deadline deal will involve Denver trading Earl Watson, Voshon Lenard, and/or others. It also appears that Steve Francis is moving somewhere, perhaps New York or Minnesota.

P.S. Didn't Tracy McGrady look awesome in the All-Star Game? If the West had won by two instead of lost by two, he would have been the MVP for sure.

Glad to see that Blogger appears to be sending out emails again, at least for posts, if not comments (for some reason, RM's response didn't come through). RM makes a good point -- the ESPN Trade Machine is the exact same as Real GM's Trade Checker, but with one major upgrade: actual salaries instead of the incomprehensible salary ratio used by Real GM. That makes it much easier to eyeball potential trades. Thus, it has been added to the website.
